“Wearing” two giant tumors on his face, causing facial deformities, patient Ly Mui Xien (born in 1968, from Cao Bang) is currently being cared for by doctors at K Central Hospital before undergoing major surgery. Patient Ly Mui Xien is being cared for at K Central Hospital, Tan Trieu commune, Hanoi. Patient Ly Mui Xien with giant tumors being cared for at K Central Hospital Doctor Nguyen Quoc Bao, Head of the Head and Neck Department, K Central Hospital, said that patient Ly Mui Xien (born in 1968 in Nguyen Binh district, Cao Bang province) was admitted to the hospital with two giant tumors on his face, causing facial deformities, with both eyes bulging upwards, pushing the eyes to the forehead, making it difficult to see the way. The patient was diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia of the jaw and face area. Results from computed tomography scans showed multiple tumors in the jaw and face area, including a large tumor measuring 8x11x18 cm developing from the upper jawbone and the maxilla, a conglomerate of multiple small tumors invading and compressing the eye sockets on both sides, the nasal bones… These tumors have heterogeneous structures, containing fibrous tissue, calcification. According to Dr. Bao, due to the tumors growing too large, they have pushed the two eyes out of the eye sockets, elongating and compressing the optic nerves. But a very fortunate thing is that these tumors did not damage the brain, causing no brain hemorrhage or damage to the brain membrane. Images of the giant tumor on the patient’s face taken by computed tomography The patient Xiên has a family and currently has 4 children. According to the patient’s family, after giving birth to the third child, she began to suffer from toothaches. She used wild leaves for drinking and applied them to the painful areas, but the pain did not ease, and symptoms of swelling on both sides of the face began to appear, and the tumor has since been growing larger. Dr. Bao said that the patient is currently being cared for and treated to improve his weak physical condition. Surgery is expected to be performed next week. “We expect to prepare about 6 units of blood and necessary consumables to perform this special surgery. This is not the first time we have received patients with this condition. Previously, in 2007, the hospital successfully removed tumors for 5 siblings in a family in Thai Nguyen province, all of whom had fibrous dysplasia of the jaw and face area. Currently, the health of these patients is stable and the tumors have not shown signs of recurrence. Although this surgery is much more complicated, with experience from previous surgeries, I hope the patient will have good results,” Dr. Bao shared. Earlier in July 2007, with the support of readers, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper supported bringing these 5 patients to K Central Hospital for examination and surgery. Patient Luc Thi Hai, who had a large tumor weighing 7 kg in a family of 5 children of Mr. Luc Van Quan and Mrs. Truong Thi Nam (in Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province) suffering from fibrous dysplasia of the jaw and face, had the tumor successfully removed. After 3 surgeries to remove the tumor and correct the deformities, patient Luc Thi Hai can now confidently integrate into life. In addition, the other 4 cases, siblings of patient Hai, have also had their tumors successfully removed by doctors at K Central Hospital. From the place where Mr. Quan’s children had to live in the forest, isolated far from the village because of the “rare disease”, now, 8 years after surgery, these patients have integrated into life, attending school and work. Among them, Luc Thi Hai is the patient with the largest tumor, and one younger brother has married and had a healthy child.
